Resolving Mismatches and Measure Functions for Evaluating Its Validity

One of the difficulties in building consistent databases comes from mismatches between two digital maps. They are caused by the diversity of database providers and the methodology of map production. Rubber sheeting is one of crucial problems in Geographical Information System, which is a mapping procedure to resolve mismatches between two geographical maps representing the same region with a few mismatches. In this paper, we propose a new rubber sheeting method using the decomposition of a polygon. We also propose three measure functions to evaluate the validity of the result of rubber sheeting. Measure functions are based on three properties, namely, topological, directional and metrical properties between geographic objects. In our experiments, our method preserves topological, directional and metrical properties of a map during transformation as well as geometric accuracy. Experiments also proved our measure functions for the accuracy of rubber sheeting is quit useful and valid to evaluate mapped results.
